Drum majors selected for new school year

After a long audition process, band director Andy Easton has selected the 2019-2020 drum majors. Current juniors Blaise Alfredson and Matthew Mendez and sophomore Daniel Ramirez will take the podium.

“I couldn’t believe I got it,” Mendez said. “It’s something I’ve wanted for a long time and have been working for. I’m really happy and grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given.”

The audition process starts with an interview, and a week later the candidates compete in front of a panel of judges and show off their commands, marching, salutes and conducting.

“For about 10-15 minutes a night I practiced my conducting,” Alfredson said. “I practiced my salute and conducted the piece we were given. To improve myself during the audition, I helped those who asked for my help.”

The drum majors are excited for what this marching season has in store for the band.

“I’m super excited,” Ramirez said. “The show is awesome, the music is cool, the student leadership team is awesome. It’s a lot to look forward to.”

Being a drum major requires a lot of work and responsibility and the selected band members can’t believe they get to hold this position.

“When I was a freshman I always looked up to the head drum major, Daniel Toscano,” Alfredson said. “I thought he was great at marching band and I couldn’t imagine that I’d be in the place he was.”

Marching season begins the Monday after school is out at Mini-Camp. The drum majors will teach the band the fundamentals of marching before the season is in full swing.
