German students earn top honors at state



German students won many awards on Saturday at the state contest.

After competing in the Texas State German Contest on Saturday, German students won several awards and placed ninth in the small school category.

All participants placed in the top 10 in their events and several students came out as state champions. Additionally, the team earned a first place trophy in the German Club Album category, in which students create a photo album of club activities from February 2019 to February 2020.

Junior Holly Luebsen will be our school’s nominee for a Gail Cope Texas State German Contest Scholarship. Schools can only nominate one student, who must have placed in the top five in at least three events. Nominated students for the state scholarship are a small group of only about 10 students per year.

Students who placed in the top five in their events are:
– Freshman Hayden Landry: first place Poetry Reading Level 1, fourth place Prose Reading Level 1
– Juniors Eva Thor and Kaedyn Colton: first place Duet Acting Level 3
– Sophomore Haley Kilcoyne, junior Holly Luebsen, junior Eva Thor, junior Emma Todd, senior Viviana Jimenez-Schivley, and senior Mary Catherine Schmitz: first place German Club Album (group event)
– Sebastian Reyes-Terrazas: second place Poetry Reading Level 2
– junior Holly Luebsen: second place Extemporaneous Speaking Advantaged, 5th place Advantaged Speaker Test
– junior Walter Plantinga: fourth place Prose Reading Level 2
– junior Stephanie Villasenor: fourth place Poetry Reading Level 2
