Last weekend, the fishing club competed in a Texas High School Bass Association fishing tournament at Lake Sam Rayburn. Two students, senior Hunter Bertrand and junior Lukas Benton, placed second in the tournament and won $1,000 scholarships each.

They caught a total weight of 16.08 lbs. The captain of the boat, a parent, had to be polygraphed to make sure they didn’t cheat and, once it was confirmed that they were honest, the team was declared second.

“I’m very proud of them,” fishing club sponsor Jennifer Bourgeois said. “None of them had ever been through a polygraph experience before, so it was cool for them to do so well and experience something like that, especially since this is our first year as a club.”

Early in the morning, 256 boats entered the water, seven of which were from TMHS. Of these seven, two placed in the top 50 and two more placed in the top 100, which was a pleasant surprise to members of the fishing club. The teams plan to participate in more tournaments through the year.
